Extended Day Programs Sponsors Placemat Art Contest

The Office Of Extended Day Programs is sponsoring a placemat art contest in celebration of Lights On Afterschool 2009. This year’s theme is "Afterschool 2009 - Cooking Up Success." This contest will provide our afterschool participants an opportunity to demonstrate some of their creative talents.

Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide rally in support of afterschool programs. More than one million children, parents, community leaders and others are expected to participate in events across the country (Afterschool Advocate, 2008).

Co-sponsors City of Columbia, Richland School District One, South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G), Junior Achievement, The South Carolina Afterschool Alliance, the University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health, EdVenture Children’s Museum and Junior League of Columbia will host a Legislative Breakfast on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Drew Wellness Center. The winning placemats will be replicated and placed on the tables at this event. The artwork will also be featured on our website http://www.r1extendedday.org, giving us yet another avenue to celebrate the successes of our students.

Deadline for submission is Monday, October 5, 2009. Placemats will be judged and awards announced on Monday, October 19, 2009. Our judges are:

Representative from South Carolina Electric and Gas
Representative from Junior Achievement
Representative from the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance

CONTEST STIPULATIONS:
The contest is open to students K - 12th grade.

The contest will be divided into the following categories (K - 2nd), (3rd - 5th), (6th - 8th), and (9th - 12th).

The contest is open to all Afterschool Program participants in Richland One (i.e., Comprehensive Remediation, Athletic Tutorial, 21st Century Community Learning Center,
Afterschool Childcare, SCE&G Homework Centers and the City of Columbia’s KOBAN Afterschool Program).

Student submissions should accompany the attached application form. The entry should be submitted to the attention of Coretta McGill in the Office of Extended Day Programs, Waverley Administration Building, 1225 Oak Street Columbia, South Carolina, 29204 or mail code #634.

All entries must accompany a Parental Media Release Form. This form will allow the district to publicize the winners in the local, state and national media.

Placemats should be 11 X 17 in size. It should be creative, original, and centered around the theme "Cooking Up Success."

Entries will be judged on neatness, creativity, and attention to details.
