Richland One Extended Day Programs In The News

Camp City Year 2010

City Year is busy planning for our annual spring break camp, Camp City Year. Camp City Year is a weeklong day camp for children grades 1st- 5th in the Greater Columbia area. Camp will take place the week of April 5-9th, 2010, 7:30a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Park Elementary School located at 4200 Main Street. Monday through Thursday will start at 7:30am and end at 4pm, and Friday will be a half day ending at 12pm. It is an exciting and educational way for your children to spend their break.

Camp City Year is planned and staffed by City Year corps members. City Year, a proud member of the AmeriCorps network, is a national service program that unites diverse 17-24 year olds for a challenging year of full-time service, leadership development, and civic engagement. We will serve 125 children during this spring break camp from Richland County School District One. Camp will feature activities such as art & crafts, education, fine arts, recreation, and service and will be supplemented by special events including guest speakers.

Our 2010 theme, World Safari, was chosen by this year’s Corps Members to teach students about the different regions and cultures around the world, and how they can learn to "celebrate the diversity of people ideas, and cultures around them." It is through this idea that we hope to instill a sense of not only leadership and motivation but also a renewed excitement about learning and their world! During the week, campers experience these ideas through a fun educational theme!!

City Year was founded on the ideals of what young people can do, and through this camp, we hope to spread some of that enthusiasm, hope, and optimism about what children, even at a very young age, can accomplish. Through service activities and community explorations, we aim to get the campers more involved in their own communities.

If you are interested in registering your child for Camp City Year, please pick up an application from the school guidance counselor or complete an application which can be found below. Applications should be dropped back off to the guidance counselor, mailed to the City Year Office at 1919 Hampton St, Columbia, SC 29204, or faxed to Heather Siegfried at 803.254.1297. The application deadline is Monday, March 8, 2010.

Applications will be processed on a first come, first serve basis until all slots are full. If a student is accepted, a $15 registration fee is expected per camper and will cover all camp expenses including a nutritious breakfast and lunch each day. This fee will be collected from all accepted campers at one of the MANDATORY Parent Orientations held on March 23 and 25 at 6:30pm at Hyatt Park Elementary. A parent or guardian needs to attend ONE of the two orientations held.
