In recognition of the role of after-school programs, Richland One hosted a convocation to advocate for after-school programs, increase the awareness of after-school opportunities in the community, honor the staff working in the after-school programs, and recognize those individuals who quietly and tirelessly support after-school programs. The event was held on Wednesday, September 3 in the Gibbes Middle School Auditorium.

The Convocation featured a keynote address by City of Columbia Police Chief Tandy Carter and student performances by the St. Andrews Middle School Choral Ensemble. Lucas McFadden, Reporter for WIS-TV and host of the “Live With Lucas” Show, served as the Master of Ceremonies. The Convocation concluded with the presentation of the 2008 “Great Friend to After-School” Awards. These awards were given to ten individuals, businesses and organizations exhibiting tremendous support of Richland School District One’s After-school Programs. The honorees included: Sheriff Leon Lott (Richland County Sheriff’s Department), Dr. John Spurrier (University of South Carolina – Capstone Scholars Program), Camille Weston (Richland One Teacher and After-school Staff Member), Henry Hopkins (Eau Claire Community Council), Jocelyn Brannon (Palmetto School of Protocol), Joyce Epps (Benedict College – School of Education), Manager Jimmy James (Columbia Blowfish), Ed Carlon and Staff (Richland School District One – Office of Budget Services), Robert Hardison and Staff (Richland School District One – Office of Procurement), and Olisha Durant (Richland School District One – Transportation Division).

Following the Convocation, a reception was held in honor of the After-school Program Staff and the 2008 “Great Friend to After-school” honorees.

The Office of Extended Day Programs will host the following after-school programs this year: 21st Century Community Learning Centers, PROJECT ACT, Athletic Tutorial, After-school Childcare, SCE&G Homework Centers, and Comprehensive Remediation.
